Fall Walleye Fishing
Brainerd fishing guidesAsk Brainerd fishing guides; "When is the best time to catch a trophy walleye?" and the response will always be fall. The start of the fall walleye fishing season can vary from year to year, but it's usually going pretty strong in the Brainerd Lakes area by mid August. The exact timing of the bite depends on the walleye's current food supply. Walleyes love the weeds. The weeds provide walleyes with shade and security. Walleyes will use cabbage weeds for cover as long as there is food present. The weeds were packed with yellow perch in July. This all changes is August. The young of the year perch have been chewed down by now and things aren't as easy for the walleyes anymore. The walleyes have to hunt longer and harder each day in August to feel their bellies. The fish are now forced to start searching outside of the weeds for food. This makes them very easy to see on a depth finder. This is a great time for local fishermen and Brainerd fishing guides. The fishing is easy and the weather is great. The key locations are the outer edges of the same cabbage beds the walleyes had been using all summer. Wind is an important factor in pulling walleyes out from the weeds. Strong winds blow clouds of small crustaceans and minnows across large stretches of open water and then concentrate them on the leading edges of wind blown lake structures. The yellow perch will flock to these areas to take advantage of the easy pickings. Any walleyes on the point are easily tempted from the weeds by the sudden abundance of perch in the area. Marv Koep, a legendary fishing guide in Brainerd, likes to call this time of year his chance to get even. The walleyes are easier to catch this time of year. The warmer water temperatures have increased the walleyes' metabolism and the shortage of food has made them aggressive. Include the beautiful colors of the leaves and the I'm sure you'll agree it's almost paradise.

Daytime Walleye Location
Dwindling perch numbers force the walleyes to work harder in the fall. Unlike the easy days of summer when walleyes only left the cover of the weeds after dark,  fall walleyes have to spend the bulk of their time outside the weeds. Brainerd fishing guides know search baits are very effective lures this time of year. A searching pattern is any technique which allows a angler to cover water quickly.
